Former Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a Espana winner Nairo Quintana has been confirmed for his current team, Movistar, another year.
The Colombian climbing star was widely expected to stay on the Spanish World Tour team for another 1 year. However, for unknown reasons, the definitive green light did not appear until 2025, just 6 weeks before the start of the season.
Scheduled to turn 2 on May 35 next year, Quintana returned to Movistar at the beginning of 2024. Previously, on a positive test for the painkiller tramadol, he was disqualified from the 2022 Tour de France, leaving his team at the time, Alcea Samsic.
Quintana was not classified as an anti・doping violation, but was suspended because the crimes were covered by uci's medical rules. He had no choice but to retire from racing in 2023.
Quintana has supported the leaders of the Movistar team primarily this season, but multiple crashes and illnesses have plagued the possibility of Colombia's consistent year.
It did not stop him from a remarkable near-miss after a long break in the toughest mountain stage of the Giro d'Italia, which has only been overhauled in almost sight of the finish at Livigno by overall winner Tadej Pogañar (UAE Team Emirates).
Having won the Giro d'Italia in 2014 and the Vuelta a España in 2016, Movistar won multiple podiums in the Tour de France with Quintana's immense climbing talent in his heyday. Since returning to the Spanish team in 2024 and into his 30s, Quintana's main role has been as a top Mountain domestic.
"2024 was a good year," Quintana said in a team press release announcing the contract renewal.
"Personally, I had some setbacks starting with COVID, with a ruptured sternum and a broken hand. These challenges, along with a few more crashes, meant I couldn't be 100% at the key moments of the season. But I was still able to fight back and recover well to help the team.
"I'm updating in 2025 to get greater continuity, fight hard in each race and get Enric Mass to the best position possible in the 3 week race.
"During the 2025 season, we will also aim to earn as many [UCI] points as possible, as is the last year of this particular round of [World Tour] classification."
