Between 2016 and 2023, after winning 14 track medals, Filippo Gunna (Ineos Grenadiers) decided to forego track racing from 2025 to focus on road racing.
Ganna told Adnkronos during an event at the Technical University of Milan that the progressive shift to the road was due to his race schedule.
"If you look at the list, the time spent on the track will be less than many events. In my case, that means no longer participating in world championships or World cups on the track, and maybe some more to improve on the road
Ganna will be able to do things like win an Olympic gold medal in team pursuit in 2021 and set a time record in 2022 by riding a stunning 1km in 56.792 hours in team pursuit. It has had great success on the track.
Foresaw his decision, the 6-time track personal pursuit world champion skipped the 10-Month World Championships held in Denmark this year.
Ganna, an outstanding time trialist of his generation and winner of the 2020 and 2021 World Time Trial titles, was overturned by Remco Evenepoel this year.
Ganna won a bronze medal in Team Pursuit at the Paris Olympics, but Ganna admitted she was disappointed to win a silver medal when she was 15 seconds slower than Evenepoel, who won the time trial.
Once again, the 2-Time Trial World Champion (2020, 2021) was ranked 2nd after Evenepoel in the time trial of the World Road Championship in Zurich.
In 2024, he added the 5th Italian Time Trial Championship to Palmares, winning the Giro d'Italia stage 14 with a time trial victory.
Gunna will continue to use the track as part of his training to achieve his goal of winning.
"Obviously I have not abandoned the truck, it is necessary for those loads that I can not keep on the road."”
