World champion Lotte Kopecký has yet to study the route of the 2025 Tour de France Femme, but wants to see how well she can perform in the Grand Tour with fully focused training.
The most versatile rider in the women's peloton, Kopecký has shown the potential to win a Grand Tour despite being a one-day specialist, finishing runner-up in the Tour de France Femme and Giro d'Italia women's and winning the overall in the UAE Tour the past two seasons.
Kopecký faces multiple challenges to win the Tour in 2025. The route includes nine tough stages, and her former teammate Demi Volering's move to FDJ-Suez makes her a major competitor rather than a teammate.
“Two years ago I was second in the Tour, and this year I'm second in the Giro, both times without any special preparation. So within the team, the question is, “What would you do if you had that preparation?” That's the question."
Kopecky, who won his fifth Flanders Trophy of the Year, revealed to Het Nieuwsblad: ”I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to do it, but I think I'll be able to do it. De Ronde and Roubaix will definitely stay in my program, but I have already won. So I want to try to win my class in the Grand Tours at least once in my career.”
The highlight route of the 2025 Tour de France Femme will include the Madeleine and Jouhei passes, two steep climbs that will be part of the final weekend to determine the Maillot Jaune in race four.
Kopecky was on vacation in South Africa at the time of the announcement, so she has yet to properly analyze the nine-day route, but there are few courses that will not suit her. She also has a good chance of earning bonus seconds on the hilly and flat stages that precede the Alpine finale.
“It takes a lot of energy to really challenge for places in the Grand Tours. Then you have to wait for the right Tour or Giro. There are courses that are worth taking on such a project,” Kopecky said.
“We don't really know the [2025] course yet. But to really get an estimate, we need to run all the individual rides in VeloViewer.”
Kopecky missed the Tour de France Femme, missing out on defending the green jersey and a podium finish in 2024; if her goals do not conflict with July, her return to the Tour will be in 2025. Whether she can win, however, is another matter entirely.
After a nearly perfect 2023 season, Kopecky had an equally unprecedented 2024 season, adding Paris-Roubaix to her illustrious record, winning Strade Bianche and the World Championships for the second time, and defending the road race rainbow jersey.
“I was very happy with my season in 2022. Last year I thought, 'It can't get any better. '” said Kopecky.
“I can assure you now that it won't work out, but maybe next year I can do it differently.”
