Undisclosed Wahoo computer leaked on Reddit forum, incorporates wind sensor and touchscreen

Cyclingnews has seen images of Wahoo's all-new cycling computer, dubbed the Elemnt Ace, leaked on the r/wahoofitness subreddit page of the popular forum site. Details are still thin on the ground, with only an image of the outer box posted, but there is much to be read from what is nominally a new product, rather than an update to the popular Bolt and Roam computer lines.

The photo posted by user anotherwahooligan is somewhat blurry, but the list of features included can be seen from the back of the box. There are the usual battery specifications, etc., but the most interesting feature is the built-in wind sensor.

It is possible that as yet unknown metrics will be deployed, such as headwind normalized speed, where the speed is adjusted to account for headwinds and tailwinds, but perhaps more likely is a version of real-time aero measurement.

Body Rocket's real-time aerodynamic drag measurement system is obviously complex, but it proves that the concept is viable, even if the hardware appears a bit clunky. A cycle computer with built-in wind speed sensors can measure speed, power output, and wind speed to determine an approximation of the drag coefficient (a core measure of aerodynamic efficiency).

Curiously, there is also a description of a built-in audio speaker, which Reddit users commented could be a replacement for the traditional bicycle bell.

In addition to the novel wind sensor, the new Element Ace appears to be bigger in many ways. In visual assessment, the screen is larger than the Elemnt Roam, but beyond that, the battery life is significantly longer than any of the current Wahoo lineup. The packaging lists over 30 hours of battery life; the Elemnt Bolt claims half that, 15 hours, and the Roam slightly longer, 17 hours.

The large screen appears to be touch-sensitive, but like competitors like the Hammerhead Karoo and Garmin Edge 1050, there are still buttons on the side. There is no mention of solar charging, so it is safe to assume that this is a standard touch screen, not Garmin's solar series.

Due to the larger size, Wahoo has probably upgraded the mounting hardware, and the included mount is aluminum rather than the usual plastic that comes with Bolt and Roam models.

Pricing was not mentioned, but is expected to be significantly higher than the Roam, which has an MSRP of £349.99/£399.99.

In a statement provided to Cyclingnews, a Wahoo spokesperson said, “Wahoo does not comment on product speculation other than to say that we are committed to developing the best and most innovative solutions for athletes.”
