Urska Zigato will finish her tenure at Liv Aroula Jeiko and begin a new professional career with AG Insurance Soudal in 2025. The Slovenian national champion in time trial and road racing said she hopes the change will help her progress at the highest level of the sport, especially in the mountains.
“I decided to join AG Insurance Soudal because I had heard nothing but good things about the team. I was immediately drawn to their vision and how they could help me fit into the team. It was clear they had a strong idea of how I could fit into the team as a rider and as a person,” Zigato said. [Within the team, I feel like I'm still learning, even though I have quite a bit of experience in the World Tour peloton. But this year I realized that I am not the youngest anymore. In that sense, I want to pass on my knowledge to the younger racers and at the same time be willing to learn from everyone. As far as racing goes, I am a pretty versatile rider, but climbing is certainly my forte. I can provide strong support there, and sometimes I might even play a role in the finale.”
AG Insurance Soudal has built a multi-level program that includes under-19, under-23, and elite teams, with a strong development component in its graduating class.
Zigato has raced professionally for the past 10 seasons. She explained in the team's press release that as a child she was involved in music, playing piano and guitar in extracurricular activities, and was active in multiple sports, including track and field, volleyball, and running. She said she fell in love with cycling after riding her mother's stationary bike and later took up road biking and joined a local team.
She signed her first professional contract with Continental team BTC City Ljubljana in 2015 and raced internationally for six seasons before disbanding as a WorldTour team in 2020. She then moved to BikeExchange (now Liv AlUla Jayco), where she supported her teammates at the highest level for four seasons.
Zigato is a four-time national champion in time trials and is looking to improve in this discipline on the World Tour. He hopes to improve in mountain courses, whether in one-day or stage races, and hopes to work with Ashley Moolman-Pasio next season. This year he finished 12th overall in the Giro d'Italia, 9th in the Tour de Suisse, 4th in the Giro de Emilia, and won the time trial and road race titles in the Slovenian championships.
“My personal goal for the 2025 season is to continue to improve in all aspects and maintain this upward trajectory, as I have done the last few years. I've proven that I can run near my best in hard climbing races, and I want to pursue that and see how far I can go when I get the chance,” Zigato said.
“From our conversations so far, I think I can grow in every aspect here. I want to improve my riding, especially in the hills, and continue to hone my time trial skills. On the team, it's also important to note that Ashley [Moolman-Pasio] has experience running GC in big stage races. I want to learn from her as well and lend a helping hand (leg) whenever I can.
“It's been four years since I last moved to a team, and I can honestly say that I feel much more at home in Greenedge. I'm not sure why, because with change comes new people, new relationships, new equipment, and new challenges. But change also brings growth, and from what I've heard about the team, I feel calm, confident, and ready to meet everyone soon."[17
