I'll really rest after this, I promise."--Lotte Kopecki sets ultimate goal for 2024 at Track World Championships

It's almost over, but not quite. After a year of track, road, and gravel challenges dating back to early February, Lotte Kopecký heads into the final round of the Track World Championships this week, but the Belgian star has promised not to overreach.

Kopecký won not only the gold medal in the road race, but also the elimination and points races, as well as the bronze in the omnium at the 2023 Cycling World Championships at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow.

Kopecky had another great 2024 season for the SD Wax Pro Time Trial team and the Belgian national team; the 28-year-old Kopecky won the fall World Championships road race, the European Championships time trial, the Tour de Romandie, and last week's She won the Simac Ladies Tour. In addition, she won a silver medal at the Gravel World Championships.

As for flying to Denmark as one of 355 athletes from 40 countries participating in this year's World Track Championships, Kopecky told Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws that she would be willing to stretch the season a bit longer. But when Sunday arrives, she will certainly be done with 2024 and her racing activities.

“A week is still possible and that is my own choice. Eliminations and points races are also my two favorite events.” This week she won her fifth Kristallen Fiets award as Belgium's top racer, she told HLN.

“Adding the Omnium is too good to be true. The Belgian federation agreed with my choice. Whatever happens in Copenhagen, it won't make my season any better, but I want to give it a chance and end this great year in style."

Although an understatement, Kopecky felt it had been a long season, adding that it was hard to switch off, but he knew he urgently needed time off the bike.

“The most important thing is to do something that has nothing to do with cycling. But realistically, that's harder than it sounds. Subconsciously, I'm so focused on my career right now that I often think about what's next right away, and I don't want to throw away all the work I've done,” she told the newspaper.

“But the last three seasons have been very intense and long. It's time for me to take a real rest and fully recover both mentally and physically. After the World Track Championships, I'm going to really rest, I promise."

Kopecky already has an idea in his head of what he wants to accomplish in 2025. He has two Grand Tour runner-up finishes in the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France, both without any special preparation.

“The Grand Tour classification is secretly in my head, but it's also a leap into the unknown. First, I'll try the Amstel Gold Race and the Liège-Bastogne-Liège next spring. I want to win these two great classics.”

As for the fifth Kristallen Fietz trophy, he has not yet decided where he will keep it. For now, one is at his grandfather's house, another is kept by his father, and two are in the attic.

“Don't get me wrong, I don't want to hide these beautiful trophies, I just don't want a living room full of racing memorabilia,” she said.

“I want to go home to a house with a normal living space, with baskets for the dogs and scratch posts for the cats.”
