Lotte Kopecky, Josh Tarling, Katie Archibald, and Others Set to Compete in Track World Championships

While the top-level road racing season wraps up this month, the track world is gearing up for one of the major events of the year: the UCI Track World Championships in Denmark.

National federations have begun announcing their representatives for the event, which will be held in Ballerup from October 16-20. This week, Great Britain and Belgium announced their representatives for the Track World Championships, including Josh Tarling, Lotte Kopecky, Dan Biggum, and Katie Archibald.

For Archibald, who holds 27 world, European, and Olympic titles, the selection marks a comeback from a freak injury that kept her out of the Paris Olympics.

She had been out of action after tripping on a step in her yard, breaking two bones in her foot, dislocating her ankle, and tearing a ligament. She resumed her activities in Ballerup as part of a seven-woman endurance squad, along with Megan Barker, Nair Evans, Josie Knight, Sophie Lewis, Anna Morris, and Jess Roberts.

“It was almost perverse that something so insignificant could have such great consequences. It's a little step behind my house. There's an uneven tile. I tripped on my right foot and fell on my left foot,” he said of his injury in an interview with Yahoo Sports.

“I've sprained my ankle a lot, so maybe I was prone to it. The last time was last year when I was in a car accident and went over the hood of a car. It stretched my ligaments, and I'm never going to be the same again.”

Archibald said his form is “a bit of an unknown” heading into the Track World Championships and that he recently completed his fourth Team Pursuit training session. He added that he is looking forward to competing with his teammates again, rather than going after the rainbow jersey again so soon after his devastating injury.

“I'm not aiming for the rainbow jersey. Of course, my teammates' ambition is the rainbow, so of course I will give it my all. But I'm looking forward to being part of the team and competing again.”

“Elinor Barker is getting married on Sunday, so she won't be racing. We will all be attending her wedding later in the week. So goal #1 is to go at the end of the week and goal #2 is to be on the dance floor at Elle's wedding. Right now, my ankle is better suited for cycling than dancing. But hopefully I can win.”

In addition to the seven women representing Great Britain in the Endurance, Sophie Campbell, Emma Finucane, Katie Marchant, and Lori Thomas are the sprint representatives, while Harry Redingham-Horn, Hayden Norris, and Joe Truman are the male sprinters, Marcus Hailey were selected.

Josh Tarling and Dan Biggum will both be part of the men's endurance squad. They are joined by Ethan Hayter, Charlie Tanfield, Josh Charlton, Noah Hobbs, Mark Stewart, and Ollie Wood.

Great Britain topped the medal standings at last year's Glasgow Games with five gold, three silver, and one bronze medal.

Meanwhile, Belgium won a total of five medals, two gold and three bronze, and Lotte Kopecky took the rainbow jersey in the elimination and points races.

Kopecky, the newly crowned road double champion, will lead the 11 Belgian riders competing in the World Championships. In addition to her, Katrien de Clercq, Helene Hesters, Phoebe Yoris, Maris Vanhoff, Lani Wittevrongel, Fabio van den Bosch, Thibaut Bernard, Lindsay de Vilder, Jules Hesters, and Noah Vandenbranden will be participating.
