Mark Cavendish to Retire from Pro Racing at Singapore Criterium

Mark Cavendish (Astana Kazakstan) will race for the last time as a professional in the Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium on November 10, organizer ASO announced.

The Manxman, who broke Eddy Merckx's record for Tour de France stage wins this summer with his 35th victory, will be joined by Biniam Girmay (Intermarché Wanty), Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin Desseuninck), Primos Roglic (Red Bull- Bora-Hansgrohe), as well as past winners Chris Froome (Israel-Premier Tech) and Vincenzo Nibali, will compete in the criterium.

Cavendish's final Tour de France stage victory came on stage 5 in Saint-Vulba, where the 39-year-old battled through the mountains to finish the race in his 15th career appearance.

The two-time winner of the Tour's green jersey will face the two most recent points-prize winners in Gilmay and Philipsen.

Other riders participating in the criterium include Arnaud de Lier, Victor Campenaerts, Thomas de Gendt (Lotto Dostony), Jonas Abrahamsen, Tobias Johannessen, Soren Werenskjold (Uno X Mobility), Matthias Vacek (Riddle Trek), Quinten Hermans (Alpecin Deceuninck), and Anthony Turgis and Matteo Vercher of Total Energies.

Cavendish, who has won 165 races in his 18-year career, including stage wins at this year's Tour Colombia and Tour de Hongri, was knighted by Prince William last week.

After the ceremony at Windsor Castle, Cavendish said he still has races to compete in during the rest of 2024.

“There are still races this year. It would be really great to race as a night commander.

“He says he won't be racing the Tour de France anymore. 'I'm not doing the Tour de France anymore.'

“I'm very lucky to have done what I love for so long and to see people riding bikes inspired by it. It's fantastic. I'm just a young man from the Isle of Man who never dreamed of being a Knight Commander.”

The Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium is not a UCI event, so Cavendish's results in this race do not count towards his official results. [Given that there are only a handful of major races remaining on the 2024 calendar, including the Tour of Guangxi (October 15-20), the Giro del Veneto (October 16), the Japan Cup (October 20), and the Veneto Classic (October 20), he already has a Tour de France and the Veneto Classic (October 20), it is likely that he has already competed in his last UCI race at the Tour de France.
