Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) will not be participating in this year's Il Lombardia. In a post to Instagram, Pidcock said that despite being in good shape, he was “left out” of the squad to compete in the season-ending Monumento.
The British racer recently finished second behind Tadey Pogachar (UAE Team Emirates) in bad weather at the Giro de Emilia and 15th in the main group behind breakaway leader Nielson Powles (EF Education Easy Post) at the Gran Piemonte
However, he was unable to finish in the top 10.
However, when race organizer RCS announced the start list for Saturday's Il Lombardia on Friday evening, Pidcock, who was considered a contender for the last European Classic of the season, was not in the lineup for the Ineos Grenadiers.
The 25-year-old Pidcock has impressed in recent years on similarly tough courses in the Ardennes Classics, winning Amstel Gold this past April and finishing second in Liege-Bastogne-Liege in 2023. However, he has never competed in Il Lombardia.
Pidcock explained his reasons for not competing in Il Lombardia on Instagram.
“Just as I was feeling better after a tumultuous end of the year, I decided not to compete in Lombardia tomorrow. I'm feeling great and was really looking forward to it! The off-season seems to be starting early. Thanks for supporting me through the tough times,” Pidcock wrote.
The Ineos Grenadiers lineup for the 2024 Fallen Leaves race will consist of Ethan Hayter, Tymen Arensman, Jonathan Castroviejo, Brandon Rivera, Ben Swift, Connor Swift and Ben Turner.
