World and Olympic Champion Grace Brown Named New President of Cyclist Alliance

Olympic and time trial world champion Grace Brown will become the new president of the Cyclist Alliance.

Brown will succeed current TCA president Iris Slappendell, who retired from her career in 2017.

Brown herself is set to retire at the end of 2024, having won gold medals at the Olympics, the World Championships, and Liège-Bastogne-Liège in both individual and mixed relay.

The goal of the Cyclist Alliance, an athletes' union that provides athletes with contracts, educational assistance, career advice, and legal and retirement support, is to “level the playing field and enable the hardworking women of the peloton today to earn a living from their sport.”

“Iris and the other board members have all made significant contributions to the professionalization of women's cycling,” Brown said in a TCA press release.

.

“Their ambition and dedication are unparalleled and have contributed greatly to the growth of the organization as well as the recognition of riders' rights.”

In the same press release, Slappendel reflected on the TCA's goals, saying, “The Cyclist Alliance has been a big part of my life since I founded the organization in 2017. At the time, women professional cyclists had no voice and little influence over where our sport was going.”

“Being there for the peloton, representing riders' concerns and ideas, and promoting collective impact has always been at the core of what we do, and I am very proud of what the TCA has accomplished over the years.”

“It wasn't always easy or fun, and at times we faced backlash, but I am even proud that we never settled for the status quo and continued to strive for fairness. I quickly realized that people feel attacked if they want to make a change. Especially in a sport where so many people want to maintain the status quo.”

In a further major change for the TCA, a general meeting will soon be held to elect new members to the Rider Council.

Brown will now ride for FDJ-Suez, his pre-retirement team, in the season-ending Chrono des Nations in France on October 13.
