The long-awaited return of the women's Milano-Sanremo could become a reality in 2025, now that one of the main obstacles, a potential scheduling conflict with the Trofeo Alfredo Binda, has reportedly been resolved.
As Tuttobiciweb's podcast revealed in an interview with organizer RCS CEO Paolo Bellino, the women's Milano-Sanremo will take place next year on March 22, the same date as the men's.
The new race will be confirmed this weekend when the 2025 calendar is released by the UCI during the Road World Championships in Zurich.
“We have added the women's Milan-San Remo to our calendar and we are working on the important 2025 season. We are also working to increase the women's presence in all major races, besides the one already held in Strade Bianche,” Bellino said in the podcast.
“We are very happy with the results of the Giro d'Italia Women's race. 'The important thing is to take projects like this seriously. Women's cycling has great potential, but we have not yet reached its full potential."
[10 The women's version of the Milan-San Remo, known as the [Primavera Rosa], was held from 1999 to 2005 and includes two of the most iconic climbs, the Cipressa and Poggio, following the final 118 km of the men's race. 11]Rumors briefly surfaced that the women's race might return in 2024, although a definitive new name has not yet been revealed,
but this was never confirmed.
But finally, in 2025, the Milan-San Remo will become the fourth women's race of the five monuments, along with the Tour de Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, and Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
One of the biggest complications in reviving the event was a scheduling conflict with the Trofeo Alfredo Binda, which is currently held one day later than the men's Milan-San Remo.
The venerable World Tour race, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, will be held in Cittiglio near Lake Maggiore, more than 300 km north of San Remo.
Teams have apparently been consulted by the UCI about holding the Milan-San Remo and Trofeo Alfredo Binda on the same weekend, but moving the Trofeo Alfredo Binda is also an option.
Cycling News understands that the inaugural women's Milan-San Remo, unlike the Strade Bianche and the Trofeo Alfredo Binda, will not be Italy's third WorldTour one-day race, but is a medium-term goal for RCS Sport.
Like its distant predecessor, Primavera Rosa, the women's Milan-San Remo is widely expected to follow the men's final leg, following the Ligurian coastline through Cipressa and Poggio, with a finale at Via Roma in San Remo.
However, it is still unclear whether the women's start will be in Genoa along the coast or a bit further west in Arenzano, as Bellino proposed in 2023.
Bellino also confirmed to Tuttobiciweb that the 2025 Giro d'Italia women will be held on October 11, the day before this year's Il Lombardia men. However, there is currently no indication as to when, or indeed if, the women's Il Lombardia will be made; the route for the 2025 men's Giro d'Italia is expected to be announced in Rome on November 15, with Albania likely to host the Grande Partenza.
