On Wednesday afternoon, Grace Brown, along with Brody Chapman, Ruby Roseman-Gannon, Michael Matthews, Jay Vine, and Ben O'Connor in the UCI Road World Championships Mixed Relay Team Time Trial, took another time trial world title.
The green and gold six-man team defeated Germany by 0.85 seconds and Italy by 8.25 seconds to be awarded the rainbow jersey and gold medal.
Brown sang the Australian national anthem for the second time in four days. Saturday's road race was his last race in national colors before retiring.
The men's trio circumnavigated the 26.85-km course used in the world championship road race in the fastest time of 33:44. The Australian women lost earlier than expected when Roseman-Gannon went red early in the climb, but Brown and Chapman picked up the pace and joined forces to take the title from the Germans, who started just ahead of them.
O'Connor, Matthews, and Wein finished together but went deep. O'Connor made the podium at the Vuelta a España, Vine recovered from a crash in Sunday's individual time trial, and Matthews had a strong and unusual ride on his time trial bike for Sunday's road race.
“We've all won Grand Tour stages and worn the leader's jersey in the Grand Tours,” said Matthews.
“We lay down when we needed to and rode smart when we needed to. It was fun."
Matthews wasn't sure if he enjoyed it.
“I wasn't prepared for the time trial, and I think I had only ridden my TT bike a couple of times since the Tour de France. 'I wanted to see the road race course at full speed, full lactation. I think that will give me an advantage on Sunday.”
“I've won this event before when it was a trade team race, but I didn't get the rainbow jersey. To win the rainbow jersey with my national teammates is huge for us.”
“We did really well in the men's ride. It couldn't have gone any better.”
Vine came into the race with a bandage on his forehead stitches after Sunday's crash, but he was proud of his ride.
“I can't believe I won gold at the World Championships. I'm going to frame this rainbow jersey and hang it in the pool room.”
Grace Brown said goodbye to her incredibly successful “last dance,” winning again after also winning gold in the time trial at the Paris Olympics.
“When the men set the fastest time and we started, it was a perfect decision. We wanted it to end,” she explained.
Brown and Chapman closed the distance with Roseman-Gannon early in the lap, but decided to push as a duo. At the intermediate time check, the Aussies were five seconds faster, and they were able to get away with it.
Brown explained, “I was looking forward to the start and found that I had no fightback from the underdogs. I ran too hard on the climb and drove Ruby into the red, but now we were down to two and I knew it was over”
. [But DS pushed me on the radio, so I knew it was close. I did everything I could to run a second longer in the last kilometer. I came up empty, but it was enough to win.” [Unlimited access to all coverage of the 2024 UCI Road World Championships, including breaking news and analysis from local journalists, including junior, under-23 and elite time trials and road races.
