Shimano, the world-renowned component manufacturer, has announced that it will host the first European Bike Mechanics Championship to promote the important role of mechanics in the cycling industry.
With more and more bicycles on the market, the demand for professional maintenance is increasing, and this competition is designed to showcase the expertise of bicycle mechanics.
The event will take place October 5-7 in Mechelen, Belgium, where teams of mechanics from many countries will race against time in a series of technical challenges designed to test their skills and knowledge.
Teams from 13 European countries, including the United Kingdom, will participate, and Brazil will be a guest participant.
The event will be hosted by Orla Chennaoui, presenter of Eurosport's “The Breakaway” Olympics and Road Race.
Through this championship, Shimano aims to raise awareness of the importance of regular bicycle maintenance. It also hopes to show that working as a bicycle mechanic is a rewarding and promising career path.
“This event showcases the exceptional talent and dedication of these unsung heroes,” said Marc van Roy, president of Shimano Europe.
“As the cycling industry continues to thrive, we want to inspire the next generation of mechanics and reinforce the important role they play in ensuring a positive cycling experience for all.”
It is also an opportunity for the brand to promote its training centers and online learning platform across Europe.
Shimano notes that the need for specialized bicycle maintenance will only continue to grow as cycling is seen as an increasingly important mode of transportation in the fight against climate change.
Group sets are becoming increasingly complex, with extra gears and electronic shifting making precision maintenance essential.
Meanwhile, other trends such as integration, hydraulic brakes, and the rise of electric bikes are broadening the expertise needed to keep modern bikes running smoothly.
