UCI Confirms Continuation of World Championships Following Serious Accident at Muriel Füller

The UCI has announced that the 2024 road and para-cycling road world championships will continue despite the serious accident suffered by Swiss racer Muriel Fleur in the junior women's road race on Thursday.

The 18-year-old Führer crashed heavily during a race in Zurich, sustaining serious head injuries in the process. After the accident, she was airlifted to Zurich University Hospital, where she died Friday afternoon at the hospital, the UCI later announced.

In a statement released Friday morning, the UCI confirmed that upcoming world championship events, including the weekend's elite road race, would go ahead as planned “in accordance with the wishes of Muriel Farrar's family.”

The governing body, the Swiss Cycling Federation, and the local organizing committee have both agreed to this policy, and the World Championships will continue with the men's C1, C2, men's T1-2, and women's T1-2 para-cycling events and the U23 men's road race later Friday.

“The 2024 UCI Road Paracycling World Championships in Zurich, Switzerland, will continue according to the race program; the UCI, the Swiss Cycling Federation and the Zurich 2024 Local Organizing Committee have agreed on this approach,” a statement released by the UCI It read.

“The continuation of the event is based on the consent and wishes of the family of Muriel Farrar. The family hopes that the 2024 UCI Road World Championships will continue as planned.”

Update: Muriel Farrar passed away Friday afternoon, the UCI and the Zurich World Championships Organizing Committee announced her death Friday afternoon during the under-23 men's road race.

“It is with great sadness that the UCI and the Organizing Committee of the 2024 UCI Road and Para-Cycling World Championships in Zurich (Switzerland) received the news today of the death of young Swiss cyclist Muriel Führer.

“With the passing of Muriel Führer, the international cycling community has lost a promising athlete.

“The 18-year-old was rushed by helicopter to the hospital in critical condition after suffering serious head injuries in a violent fall during the junior women's road race yesterday, Thursday, September 26. Muriel Füller unfortunately passed away today at the University Hospital Zurich.”
