Swiss rider Muriel Füller crashes and dies at World Championships

Muriel Füller died after falling and injuring herself on the junior women's road at the UCI World Championships in Zurich. She was 18 years old.

The Swiss rider suffered serious head injuries. The crash is believed to have occurred near Cusnacht, on the finish circuit of the World Championship. After the race, Fleer was transported by helicopter and treated at the University Hospital of Zurich.

Fuller's death was announced Friday afternoon by the UCI and the Zurich World Championships Organizing Committee during the under-23 men's road race.

“It is with great sadness that the International Cycling Union (UCI) and the Organizing Committee of the 2024 UCI Road and Para-Cycling World Championships in Zurich (Switzerland) received today the tragic news of the death of young Swiss cyclist Muriel Farrar.

“With the passing of Muriel Farrar, the international cycling community has lost a promising athlete.

“The 18-year-old was rushed by helicopter to the hospital in critical condition after suffering serious head injuries in a violent fall during the junior women's road race yesterday, Thursday, September 26. Muriel Füller unfortunately passed away today at the University Hospital Zurich.

Füller's condition was listed as critical overnight, but the UCI confirmed Friday morning at the request of the athlete's family that the scheduled race would go ahead as planned.

The UCI said early Friday that “no facts have yet been established as to how the accident occurred,” adding that “an investigation by the competent authorities is ongoing.” The governing body and the organizing committee are scheduled to hold a press conference on Friday afternoon.

Fuller, from Egg, Canton Zurich, was a promising road, cyclo-cross, and mountain bike racer, finishing second in both the time trial and road race at the Swiss Championships in June and winning a bronze medal at the European Championships in Romania in May as part of the Swiss mountain bike He won a bronze medal as part of the team. Fuller was a student at the Sports Union School in Zurich.

“Our hearts are broken and we have no words. It is with a heavy heart and boundless sadness that we must say goodbye to Muriel Farrar today. We have lost a wonderful, heartwarming young woman who always had a smile on her face. There is no understanding, only pain and sadness.”
