UCI Unable to Provide Information on Muriel Füller's Death at World Championships: ...... Due to police investigation

The UCI and the local organizing committee for the road world championships in Zurich have announced that they are unable to provide any information on the death of Muriel Farrar in the junior women's road race as the police investigation is still ongoing.

Fahler suffered serious head injuries in the crash during Thursday's race and was transported by helicopter to the University Hospital of Zurich. The Swiss rider, who competed in international road, cyclocross, and mountain bike races, died Friday at the age of 18.

At a short press conference at the Congress House in Zurich on Friday afternoon, UCI sport manager Peter van den Abel and organizing committee member Olivier Sen confirmed that at the request of Fuller's family, the remaining world championship races this weekend will continue ...

Van den Avert and Sen did not want to answer questions about the circumstances of Fleer's crash or when he received treatment for his injuries.

The Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung confirmed that the first helicopter mission by Swiss Air Rescue (REGA) in the Zurich area on Thursday left at 12:52 pm, more than an hour after the finish of the junior women's road race The report said.

“As Peter stated, an investigation is underway by the prosecution and police. I can't comment on that because we don't have any reliable information at this time,” Zeng said.

“There is no secure information and everything that is out there is a rumor. I hope that the bereaved families will be respected. Please be as factual as possible, not rumors.”

Swiss media reported that the accident occurred in a forested area above Cusnacht on the finish circuit of the World Championships, although the UCI and the organizing committee have not confirmed the exact location.

“We have not yet confirmed it,” Senn said, adding that additional safety checks had been conducted on that section of the course ahead of Friday's under-23 men's road race.

“We obviously looked into the situation that happened yesterday. We don't know if that had any impact on the accident, especially since it started raining again in the afternoon.

“As always, we believe we are doing our utmost to ensure the safety and security of our riders. The downhill was just reviewed again today as it was raining."

”The downhill was just reviewed again today as it was raining.

Asked if the timing chip on Fleur's bike was used to locate her after the crash, van den Abel replied, “The investigation is still ongoing, but certainly tracker tests will be used by the authorities.”

When Füller's death was announced Friday afternoon, the under-23 men's road race had already begun. The subsequent awards ceremony was held without music or national anthem, and Saturday's UCI gala was canceled, but Van den Abel confirmed that the rest of the race program, including the elite road race, would continue this weekend.

“The UCI is respecting the wishes of the bereaved families by continuing to host the World Championships.

Füller's death is the second tragedy in Swiss cycling in a little over a year, following the death of Gino Mader at the 2023 Tour de Suisse. Senn was the director of the Tour de Suisse and deputy general manager of the Zurich 2024 organizing committee.

“Obviously, this is another tragic death. There are many similarities and similar emotions,” Zen said. 'But today is not about Gino. Today is about Muriel, and my thoughts are with her family.”
