Campagnolo has announced the launch of its new Super Record S wireless groupset, a follow-up to the Super Record WR groupset launched in May 2023. The brand calls this “S” version a special edition, focusing on the matte black finish and additional gear options. Also coming will be an all-black HPPM power meter crankset and Bora wheelset.
Perhaps more interesting to many potential buyers, however, are the new expanded gearing options and the fact that the original Super Record Wireless launch price was £4,499 / $5,399 / €5,200 compared to £3,525 The overall (slightly) lower price of £4,499/$4,299/€3,990 would be. This new Super Record variant is comparable in price to the recently released SRAM Red AXS groupset.
This is not a brand new groupset, but appears to be a slightly tweaked Super Record WR. There is an all black matte finish, more chainring gear options, matching finish Bora wheels and power meters, and solid carbon fiber crank arms that are slightly lighter than the hollow crank arms in the WR groupset.
At launch, Super Record Wireless followed SRAM's lead and offered cassettes with 10-tooth minimum sprockets. These were paired with small 45/29t, 48/32t, and 50/34t chainrings.
With the Super Record S groupset, Campagnolo expanded the chainring options, adding larger 52/36t, 53/39t, and 54/39t options, making a total of six chainset choices.
Campagnolo also added a wider range of cassettes to the rear end gears. The new 11-32t cassette joins the previous 10-27t and 10-29t options that were announced with the Super Record WR groupset (a 10-25t was also announced at the time, but this does not appear to have been released).
According to Campagnolo, the Super Record S uses “extreme materials more sparingly,” and the new chainset features solid carbon fiber crank arms instead of the hollow crank arms of the Super Record WR, resulting in a WR groupset's total weight of 2,520g was increased by 150g.
Why would Campagnolo offer gearing along the lines of the classic option with an 11-tooth minimum sprocket? Campagnolo states that its new gearing options “can satisfy the simple enthusiast, the advanced amateur, or the demanding professional.”
When SRAM launched the first generation Red eTap AXS, it also included only smaller chainring combinations. Later, aftermarket powermeter options with 52/39, 54/41, and 56/43 teeth were added.
These were primarily for pushing larger gears, but also to reduce friction losses in the drivetrain, to reduce the angle of rotation of the chain link with a straighter chainline, to ride further down the cassette, and for pros who wanted a larger chainring combo were to be accommodated.
In 2024, Campagnolo lost its first World Tour-level representative. Does the launch of new high/wide gear options suggest that a sponsorship deal with a new pro team is underway for the 2025 season?
Campagnolo has also given the wheels a matte black finish to match the groupset. The new matte black option with toned down logo is named the Bora Ultra WTO Matt edition wheelset and is priced at £3,300 / $4,149 / €3,800, while the Bora WTO Matt edition wheelset is priced at £2,400 / 2,. 949 USD / 2,700 EUR.
The Super Record S groupset is priced lower than the Super Record, meaning that the price has been raised from the wheelset's January 2024 launch price.
A matte black Campagnolo HPPM power meter can also be ordered for a complete matched bike setup. Prices for each component and the power meter have not yet been announced.
