Relegation Watch: Primoš Roglic's Vuelta Victory Gives Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe Wings in UCI Rankings

While Tadej Pogachar and UAE Team Emirates continue to dominate the individual rider and team UCI world rankings, respectively, the teams below them have seen significant fluctuations during the Vuelta a España.

Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, the team that was fifth in the WorldTour relegation ranking for the last three years (2020-2022), suffered last year and finished the season in just 10th place. Their pre-Vuelta ranking was 7th, but Primos Roglic's overall win catapulted them to 4th, ahead of Ineos Grenadier, Sourdal-Quick Step, and Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale.

One of the richest teams in the sport, Vimaris a Bike had little to worry about being relegated to the World Tour.

Lidl-Trek was helped by Matthias Skjelmors' fifth place overall at the Vuelta a España, Tibau Nys at the Tour of Poland, Jonathan Milan and Mads Pedersen at the Tour of Deutschland, and Milan's top finish at the Tour of Reniwi, he moved up to third in the 2024 rankings and continued his climb up the Super Team ladder.

The gap between Lidl Trek and Visma Lease-a-Bike is a fraction of the UAE's massive lead, with 2,914 points separating the two teams. However, Lidl-Trek's leap forward is a better result than last year's sixth-place finish.

The gap between the teams in fourth through sixth place is much tighter: one or two wins.

Soudal Quickstep dropped one spot to fourth place, despite Mikel Landa's eighth place overall, and Ineos Grenadiers dropped three spots to sixth place.

Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale dropped one place to seventh, despite Ben O'Connor's Grand Tour podium finish, thanks to Red Bull-Borla Hansgrohe's breakthrough.

The gap between Red Bull-Bohra-Hansgrohe and Decathlon is now 1,014 points, compared to 440 points before the Vuelta. However, it should not be underestimated that Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale has moved up significantly from 18th in the 2023 ranking.

Alpecin Deceuninck and Lot Doustony continue to do well as the best professional teams in 8th and 9th place, respectively, and both teams are stable in the 2023 ranking.

Groupama-FDJ and Israel-Premier Tech are close behind in 10th and 11th place, while EF Education-EasyPost is a bit behind in 12th place.

Movistar and Jayco-Alula both move up two places to 12th and 14th, but perhaps the most important improvement is that DSM-Filmenig-Post NL moves up four places to 15th, moving further from the relegation zone.

Uno-X Mobility is the third professional team in the top 18 of the 2024 ranking, just 15 points behind Bahrain Victorious.

However, Bahrain Victorious had a strong 2023 season and will not have to worry as much about a three-year relegation as Cofidis, which finished 15th last season and 20th so far this year.

Arcare B&B Hotels has even more to worry about, having dropped two places to 19th, the same as the 2023 season.

In the 2023-2024 point total, Cofidis is 1,723 points ahead of Alcarea in 18th place, and DSM is also 725 points ahead of Cofidis. Alcare has a long way to go to remain on the World Tour.

It's an even longer road for Astana Kazakstan, which is ranked 21st this season after finishing 20th last season. They are now 4,168 points behind Cofidis on a two-year total.

Uno X Mobility has high ambitions to join the World Tour, but they are far behind Lot Doustny and Israel Premier Tech, who are almost certain to return to pro cycling's top class in 2026.

When it comes to automatic invitations to the 2025 Grand Tours, Lot Doustny and Israel Premier Tec could easily retain that honor as the top two pro teams in 2024.

The transfer season is not yet over. Astana has solid riders in Sergio Iguita, Diego Ulissi, and Wout Poels.
