Wout van Aert crashes on a rainy downhill and abandons the Vuelta a España.

Wout van Aert abandoned the 16th stage of the Vuelta a España after crashing on the descent of the Colada Lomena to Lagos de Covadonga.

The Bismarches a Bike rider was leading on the two early stage climbs, but crashed with about 50 km to go, injuring his left knee.

Van Aat received a replacement bike and attempted to return to the race, but was unable to pedal and felt obvious discomfort. After a few hundred meters, he stopped again and got into Visma's team car.

Van Aert crashed on a sharp left turn when Felix Engelhardt (Jayco Alura) Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates) also crashed behind Van Aert, but it appears that the Visma rider was the only one seriously injured.

“Wout was taken by ambulance to the hospital. There he will undergo tests,” sport director Grischa Niermann said in the team's social post. Of course we are very sad to see him leave the Vuelta in this way. Luck has not been on his side this season.
