Dan Bigum has been named technical director of Red Bull-Bohler Hansgrohe. The move comes as the German WorldTour team continues to strengthen its performance staff thanks to a significant additional investment from the energy drink brand.
Bigum recently took a three-month unpaid leave of absence from his job as performance engineer at Ineos Grenadiers to compete in the British national team Pursuit at the Paris Olympics.
The team won the silver medal, but Bigham criticized Ineos, saying, “It is clear from the fire that the team should do better.”
Johnny Wale, who built the HUUB Wattbike track team with Bigham and was involved in Bigham's 2022 world time record attempt, also left Ineos to join Bigham in the new engineering department of Red Bull-Bohler-Hansgrohe.
Primoš Roglic is under contract through 2025, while Red Bull-Bohra-Hansgrohe is reportedly trying to pull Lemko Evenpoel out of Sudar-Quick Step. They have already signed Giulio Pellizzari, Finn Fischer Black, and Lawrence Petit, and have chosen not to keep Sergio Iguita, Bob Jungels, Leonard Kemna, Maximilian Schachmann, and Marco Haller.
Bigham will work with riders and equipment sponsors such as Specialized to optimize performance.
Bingham admitted to the PA news agency that the track world championships in Denmark from October 16-20 will be his last major competition as an elite rider, but he will continue to race with his Huub WattShop team.
“For the past 10 years I have balanced my life as an elite athlete with my passion for advancing cycling through engineering. Now that I have accomplished almost everything I dreamed of in cycling, I am ready to devote my full attention to supporting the next generation of winners,” said Bigum when Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe confirmed his role
. [The opportunities at Red Bull-Bohra-Hansgrohe are immense. No other team can match this level of combined knowledge, competence and expertise across the Red Bull-Bohra-Hansgrohe network.
Red Bull-Bohra Hansgrohe expects Bigum and Weil to increase the team's technical performance potential.
They will work with other Red Bull organizations, such as Red Bull Advanced Technologies, to focus on optimizing all aspects of performance and integrating new and innovative technologies into cycling.
“In Dan and Johnny we have absolute experts in combining cycling and engineering know-how,” said Rolf Aldag, chief of Red Bull-Bohra Hansgrohe's sports division.
“Red Bull-Bohra-Hansgrohe's new engineering division combines the top know-how of partners like Specialized with Red Bull's innovative technology entity. This combination is unique in the cycling world and promises great potential.” [25
