Jakob Omurzel (Adria Mobil Juniors) suffered a major crash in the first stage of the Giro della Lunigiana and the 18-year-old required resuscitation, but is now reportedly in stable condition in a hospital in La Spezia, on the Tyrrhenian coast of northern Tuscany, Italy. He is reportedly in stable condition.
Omurzel is considered a future talent in Slovenian cycling and is likely to follow in the footsteps of Tadej Pogachal. He is a two-time national road race champion and this year's Paris-Roubaix Junior winner.
The accident occurred early in the first stage of the Giro della Lunigiana and left Omurzel and Italian rider Jacopo Sasso hospitalized.
The rider appeared to have collided with a signalman, but the signalman was an outrider on a motorcycle who stopped to guide the peloton around a low road furniture, which was captured on video.
Omsrel's condition was initially reported as serious, and several news outlets reported that he required resuscitation at the scene due to severe injuries to his neck.
