Ineos Grenadiers will field a young but ambitious team of riders for the Vuelta a España, including Josh Tarling, Carlos Rodriguez, and Timen Arensmann.
The 20-year-old Tarling will be making his Grand Tour debut and will target the time trial stages, especially the opening 12km time trial in Lisbon, Portugal on Saturday.
Carlos Rodriguez is the logical overall contender for Ineos. The 23-year-old Spaniard was seventh overall in the Tour de France and sixth in the 2022 Vuelta, while the 24-year-old Allenman finished sixth in the Giro d'Italia and will lead the team as rider for Geraint Thomas.
Kim Haiduk, Honatan Narvaez, Lawrence De Plus, Brandon Rivera, and Oscar Rodriguez are also on the eight rider roster.
“This young, dynamic team has the strength and potential to challenge for GC as well as stage wins on a variety of terrain,” said Ineos Performance Director Scott Drawer. [The Vuelta is] probably one of the most unpredictable Grand Tours because of the route, the heat, and the timing of the event. The riders and the entire team are ready to give it their all.
“We want to be aggressive and take our chances, whether it's taking a GC time with Carlos and Timen or a stage win with riders like Josh and Johnny. Josh has a great chance to take the leader's jersey on the first stage.” He proved once again at the Paris Olympics that he is strong in the TT discipline.”
Tarling finished fourth in the Olympic time trial despite a flat tire and a bike change. He is the current European champion and is the clear favorite to win the 12km time trial on the one-way coastline. A win would, of course, give him his first leader's jersey.
The Vuelta route is packed with climbs and mountain finishes, by far the most climbing of the three 2024 Grand Tours, and the three-week race will start in the Portuguese capital on Saturday, August 17 and end in Madrid on Sunday, September 8
Arensman and Rodriguez will be supported by De Plus, Rivera, Haiduk, and Rodriguez, while Narvaez will face the likes of Wout Van Art in the sprint finish.
“After the Tour I took some days off to recover and then started training a little bit to keep myself in shape. I think my body is already recovering and I'm starting to feel more like myself, even though I was out of shape for a while,” Carlos Rodriguez said.
“It will be a new experience for me because this is the first time I have raced two Grand Tours in a row. I want to enjoy the race as much as possible and the crowds on my home course will be special.”
“I will be with a strong team and I will fight to get the best possible result, both on GC and on the stages. I have already done a lot of racing and training with Timen and he will help me manage the different situations during the race in the best way possible.”
