Demi Volering, who lost the yellow jersey on stage 5 of the Tour de France, has no broken bones from the high-speed crash and will likely start stage 6, according to SD Walks Pro Time.
The defending champion crashed 6.3km from the finish in Amneville. However, a medical update posted on the team's social media Thursday evening revealed that the majority of the injuries were superficial, although there were some road rash.
“Demi Volering was examined by Team SD Volks Pro Time's team doctor at her hotel after her crash on stage 5 of the Tour de France. She suffered minor bruising and superficial abrasions to her lower back and buttocks.
“The focus of treatment is recovery. Volering is expected to be able to continue touring on Friday.”
Volering also suggested that Lemiremon take the start, posting two sarcastic posts on her Instagram after the stage, “When my ass was still in one piece” and “Stay away from me tomorrow.”
She struggled all the way to the finish, closing the gap to teammate and stage winner Blanca Vas to 1:49, but Kasia Nieviadoma (Canyon-SRAM) took second place on the day and advanced to the yellow jersey. [Misha Bredewald questioned the safety of the exit of the roundabout where Vollaring crashed, and sports manager Danny Stam said radio trouble caused Bredewald to fall back only to help her.
Volering was glad that the crash was not as serious as it could have been, given her speed, instead of concentrating on the new 1:19 gap to Nieviadma, who had dropped to ninth place.
“Considering the speed of the crash, I'm glad I didn't break any bones. After the crash I had to recover and check everything. Then I was able to get back on the bike and continue racing,” Vollering said in the same post.
“We'll have to see how I feel tomorrow morning, but I think I can continue the Tour tomorrow.
With three stages to go, Voerling is entering the high mountains, the terrain most suited to her, but Nienyadoma is defending a sizable lead and will need to do her best on the Grand Bornand and Alpe d'Huez summit finishes to take back the yellow from the Polish rider. It will be a challenge for the Poles.
