Pfeiffer Georgi (Dsm-Filmenig-Post NL) abandoned the Tour de France Femme after a hospital examination confirmed fractures in her neck and right hand.
The British national champion lost the race leader's yellow jersey when she was involved in a crash late in stage 5 when Demi Vollering crashed hard.
“After yesterday's violent crash at the Tour de France Femme, Pfeiffer went to the hospital where her injuries were thoroughly checked. The fracture in his neck fortunately did not require surgery and the fracture in his right hand was confirmed,” said Dr. Kamiel Aldershoff of the Dsm-Firmenich PostNL. [It was a serious fall and we will continue to evaluate and monitor her until she returns home. She will likely be off the bike for at least the next four weeks, but there is no rush, her health and recovery is our top priority.”
Georgi is the first rider to leave the race in the dsm-Filmenig-Post NL. Team leader Juliette LaBouce is currently in fifth place overall, 56 seconds behind new race leader Katarzyna Nieviadoma (Canyon Slam).
The crash occurred at the exit of a roundabout where the road narrowed and veered left. Georgi and EF Autry Cannondale's Magdalene Valliere suffered concussions. Georgi started his third Tour de France femme in good form, finishing fifth in the Olympic road race.
The stage from Bastogne to Amneville could have been an opportunity for the 23-year-old Georgi until a crash ended the race.
Georgi, who will compete in the Tour de France Femme, had a strong season, finishing second overall in the Baloise Ladies Tour in July, winning the national championship road race in June, and third in the Paris-Roubaix Femme in April.
