Demi Volering (SD Worx-Protime), who lost yellow after crashing just 24 hours earlier, bounced back with a strong ride on stage 6 of the Tour de France Femme.
Vollering crashed in a group crash after exiting a roundabout on stage 5, losing 1:53 to race leader Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM).
With the extent of her injuries unknown, Vollering started the day in Lemiremont to rest and recover, with the goal of not opening a 1:19 gap to the Polish rider.
“I just wanted to have a good day, survive a little bit, relax a little bit, and recover for tomorrow,” Vollering told Cycling News and Vero.
“I'm very motivated to get my yellow back, so I just tried to stay as calm as possible today and rest my legs a little bit to get ready for the next two days.”
Niamh Fischer-Black and Christine Majerus broke away from the 18-man breakaway group, allowing Vollering to rest in the safe bubble of her remaining teammates until the hard-fought final.
“It's good that there were no yellows today, so there was no need to draw attention to us or close anything,” DS Anna van der Breggen told Cycling News and TV2. [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] 0]
Vollering and Van der Breggen were equally spurred on by the former's strong day in the Vosges and Jura mountains on Friday, but the prospect of an elevation gain of over 3,000 meters and a finale atop the Grand Bornand is more challenging.
“I think I know it well,” said Vollaring, who repeated the 7.1km climb twice before the race, “it's a really hard stage, so it's a little scary. But if I'm scared, I'm sure a lot more people are.”
