At the Vuelta a España, Wout Van Aert (Vismaris A-Bike), who was in second place overall after the first stage, took the red leader's jersey with bonus seconds in the second stage.
As expected, Caden Groves (Alpecin-Desseuninck) won the second stage in a group sprint ahead of Van Aert and Corbin Strong (Israel Premier Tech).
Van Aert now leads the overall standings by 6 seconds over overnight leader Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates), who finished safely in a group sprint.
The fallen Matthias Vacek (Lidl-Trek) rejoined the peloton before the mad dash to the finish and is now in third place overall by 5 seconds. The Czech rider retained the Best Young Rider jersey.
The rest of the riders in the top 10 held the same positions. Stefan Kühn (Groupama-FDJ) is currently the leader in the mountains, in fourth place, nine seconds behind.
Edoardo Affini (Visma-Reese A Bikes) and Josh Tarling (Ineos-Grenadiers) are fifth and sixth, respectively, 11 seconds behind. Mauro Schmidt (Jayco Alura) followed in seventh, 19 seconds behind.
Three-time winner Primoš Roglic (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) remains the best pre-race contender for the win, in eighth place, 20 seconds behind.
Bruno Amirail (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) is 21 seconds back in the top 10, followed by UAE's Joan Almeida in 22 seconds.
Among the pre-race favorites, Matthias Skjelmoes (Lidl Trek) is in 13th place, 25 seconds behind. Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) is 37 seconds behind, followed by Enric Mas (Movistar) at 42 seconds. Richard Kalapas (EF Education Easy Post) is 43 seconds behind and Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers) is 49 seconds behind.
Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) is 55 seconds behind, defending champion Sepp Kuss (Visma-Reese A Bikes) is another second behind, and Mikel Landa (Sudar-Quick Step) is 1:08 behind.
Racing continues on Monday with the third and final stage in Portugal.
