The 2024 Tour de France women had a thrilling 8th stage when Demi Vollaring (SD Works-Protime) went on a long attack to make up time lost in a crash on stage 5, bringing the overall standings within a few seconds of each other. Volering won the stage to the summit of Alpe d'Huez, but Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM) fought back with a mythical climb to take the overall win by 4 seconds over Volering.
Pauliena Rooijakkers (Fenix-Deceuninck) was the only rider able to keep up with Vollaring's attack on the Col du Grandon and followed him to the finish. In the end, Loijackers was 4 seconds behind Vollaring and 10 seconds behind Niwiadma. With this result, Phoenix-Desseuninck's Loijackers moved into third place overall, surpassing her fourth place finish in the Giro d'Italia women's race.
Evita Mujic (FDJ-SUEZ) had a shot at the GC podium, but ultimately finished fourth overall, 1:21 behind Niewiadoma. Gaia Lealini (Lidl-Trek) moved up seven places in the final stage to finish fifth, 2:19 behind. Sedrine Kervaor (Serratigit-WNT) started on the overall podium and did her best to attack on the descent of the Grandon, but ultimately lost a few minutes on the Alpe d'Huez and fell to sixth place, 2:51 behind.
Meanwhile, Sara Gigante (AG Insurance Soudal) moved up 10 places on GC and finished the race in 7th place, 7:09 behind. Lucinda Bland (Lidl-Trek) did important work for her teammate Lealiini (and Nienyadoma) in the valley between the Col du Grandon and the Alpe d'Huez, and kept her own pace up the finish climb.
Talita de Jong (Lotto-Dostney) dropped from 5th to 10th place on the final day, finishing 8:12 behind. Puck Peterse (Phoenix-Desseuninck) also felt a day away on the final stage, dropping to 11th place, 8:28 behind second place, but Peterse still took the white jersey for the best U23 rider.
Erica Magnardi (UAE Team ADQ) moved up to 12th place, 9:16 back, with Shirin van Unrooy (Lidl Trek) in 13th at 9:35, Niamh Fisher Black (SD Works Pro Time) at 11:39, 11:49 Mareille Meijering (Movistar Team) rounded out the top 15.
