Jay Vine will race the Vuelta a Burgos on Monday, making his return to competition for the first time since being seriously injured in a major crash at Iturria Basque in April.
The five-day Vuelta a Burgos is an important build-up race to the Vuelta a España, with Sepp Kuss, Sian Wittdebrooks (Visma Lease-a-Bike), Nairo Quintana (Movistar), Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious), Tao Geoghegan Hart (Lidl Trek) and others will compete.
The Australian suffered multiple vertebral fractures in the crash, including a cervical fracture and two thoracic fractures.
Vine was one of the riders injured in a group crash that occurred on the Oraeta descent of the Ituriá Basque stage 4, while Jonas Vingegaard, Remco Evenpole, Primoz Roglic, and Steph Klass were also among those who fell.
Vine did not require surgery to treat his injuries, but his rehabilitation took a long time; he was allowed to begin gentle outdoor rides at the end of May, but was not allowed to ride downhill again until early July.
On Monday, the UAE Team Emirates allowed Bein to compete in this week's Vuelta a Burgos, where Rafal Mayka will lead the team.
"I am very excited to be playing in the Vuelta Burgos, which will be my first match back.
"I'm looking forward to getting back to the peloton with everyone and getting back on track. The last four months have been pretty tough and I haven't been able to participate in many races, but I'm eager to get back to my best and get back to normalcy."
Vine was scheduled to compete in the 2024 Giro d'Italia in support of Tadej Pogachal. It is not yet known if he will compete in the Vuelta a España.
The UAE Team Emirates team in Burgos will consist of Igor Arrieta, Finn Fischer Black, Alvaro Hodeg, and Duarte Malivoe, who was promoted from the development team for the day.
