Cervélo has updated its Caledonia-5 endurance road bike. Caledonia was originally launched in 2020 and has become the preferred tool of many light and fast ultra-endurance cyclists who have taken on challenges such as the 1200km Paris-Brest-Paris Audax ride and the 3000km-plus transcontinental race, Cervélo says.
When we conducted a long-term review in 2021, we evaluated the versatility, ride quality, and handling of the previous generation Caledonia. The new bike's updates are subtle, as are other Cervélo upgrades, such as the latest S5 and the new P5 time trial bike.
Like all Cervélo bikes, the new Caledonia-5 features aero tubing and internal cabling with split spacers that allow the rider to adjust bar height without touching the hose.
Cervélo claims to have increased the bike's compliance for a more comfortable ride. The added compliance comes from a larger seatstay drop, but Cervello says the down tube stiffness has also been increased for a more responsive ride feel.
Other updates to the Caledonia-5 include in-frame storage. This is an increasingly popular feature on endurance bikes, found on the Trek Domane, Canyon Endurace, and the new Ribble Allroad, among others; according to Cervélo, the Caledonia-5 now includes a tube, CO2 inflator, small multi-tool, and other repair tools storage.
Cervélo offers clearance for tires up to 36 mm wide, but the bikes are equipped with 30 mm diameter Vittoria Corsa Pro Control tires on the top-spec bikes and 30 mm diameter Vittoria Corsa N.Ext tires on the lower models. Mudguards can also be attached using the included mudguards mounts.
All but the lowest spec bikes are fitted with Reserve 42/49 wheels, which according to Cervélo are "highly aerodynamic." More specifically, they include a lifetime warranty and crash replacement.
All bikes are equipped with a power meter, either a SRAM In-Series model or a Shimano-spec 4iiiii Precision 3 Pro.
Shimano-spec bikes are equipped with a 52/36t crankset and 11-34t cassette, while SRAM-spec bikes are equipped with a 48/35t crankset and 10-36t cassette, emphasizing Caledonia's high-speed endurance.
The Caledonia-5 is available in five spec options, starting at £5,500/$6,000/€5,999 for the SRAM Rival AXS equipped bike. This has a Leival single-sided power meter and is fitted with Vision Team i23 alloy wheels rather than the reserve carbon wheels found on the higher specs.
The next step up, the Caledonia-5, can be equipped with either Force AXS with power meter or Ultegra with 4iiiii Precision 3 Pro power meter, both priced at £7,400 / $8,700 / €7,999.
Shimano Dura-Ace is priced at £10,500/$12,000/€11,999 and includes a 4iiiii Precision 3 Pro power meter.
A frameset-only option is also available, priced at £4,400/$5,000/€4,799.
It is available in sizes 48, 51, 54, 56, 58, and 61 and in two frame colors: black and carmine red.
