Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates) is further recovering from a spinal injury sustained in a high-speed crash in Ituriar Basque in April.
The 28-year-old Australian rider was initially allowed to ride outside at the end of May, but initially only uphill.
"Obviously the recovery process is never linear and sometimes I had to adapt," he said. I'm becoming more and more like myself, and most importantly, I'm enjoying the bike." I'm now doing some quality training at the high altitude camp with the team and other guys. [With both the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a EspaƱa scheduled, Wein skipped the Australian summer season to focus on his European goals, starting the 2024 season with the UAE Tour. However, that plan was scuppered when he suffered multiple fractured vertebrae in a stage 4 crash.
He first had to spend about seven weeks in a neck brace and return to riding with uphill training, but about a month ago he took another step forward.
"It's been a little over four weeks since the doctor told me I could resume downhill riding. I'm back on the bike, resuming regular training sessions and enjoying the fuel savings of riding up and down the mountain."
The Australian joined the professional peloton in 2021 through the Zwift Academy and is currently under contract with UAE Team Emirates until the end of 2027. No word on his plans to return to racing, but it is clear that Wein is close to taking the next step. Wein said, "Honestly, I'm taking it day by day, week by week, and I'm hoping to get my number right again soon."
