Vuelta a España's offbeat stage start will be held at Carrefour Hypermarket.

Save the Date Whether it is a giant oyster raft in Galicia, the dug-out sides of an artificial salt "mountain" in Alicante, inside an aircraft carrier in Cadiz, the Roman amphitheater in Nîmes, a whiskey distillery in Segovia, or a meat processing plant in Murcia, the Vuelta a España has always long tradition of unconventional and eye-catching starts. [The 2024 peloton will probably start the neutralized section of stage 6 with a trip around the food and specials sections of the giant hypermarkets of southern Spain, passing cash desks.

Carrefour, the longtime main sponsor of the Vuelta a España, has decided to celebrate its 12th anniversary of supporting the race by opening the doors of its store in the southern suburb of Jerez de la Frontera in the Cadiz region to the peloton.

Jerez de la Frontera is well known for its horse racing and sherry manufacturing industry, but in 2014 it hosted the Vuelta a España grande parte, where the team time trial took place. This time, the peloton and lead car will cross the main commercial floor of the hypermarket before tackling the 185 km stage to the town of Junquera.

Carrefour, which employs 400 people in its Jerez de la Frontera Sur store alone, has promised a full day of fan activities to celebrate the peloton's departure from this huge hypermarket.

The Vuelta's preference for extremely unusual stage starts dates back at least to the 1990s, although it has not traditionally eschewed glamorous finishes, as the final TT of the 2002 edition was held at Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu soccer stadium.

In 2013, riders started the opening team time trial from a giant oyster raft in western Galicia, in 2015 from inside the aircraft carrier Juan Carlos I in the city of Cadiz, and in 2019 from the dug-out side of a giant artificial salt "mountain" in the town of Torrevieja near Alicante

[16] The 2021 Vuelta a España time trial start inside the Burgos Cathedral started not from inside the sacred building, but from outside the main entrance, which was the first time a team had started a time trial inside the cathedral.

In 2018 and 2022, the parking lot of a meat processing plant in Murcia was used for the start and finish.

Rumors that riders participating in the 2024 Vuelta a España peloton will receive discounts on certain products at Carrefour if they present their customer loyalty cards when signing up for stage 6 have not yet been confirmed or denied by the organization.
