After the Paris Olympics, Wout van Aert announces his first participation in the Vuelta a España.

Wout Van Aert (Vismaris A Bikes) will make his debut at the Vuelta a España, which starts in Lisbon, Portugal, on August 17.

Van Aert was originally scheduled to compete in the Giro d'Italia for the first time this year, but after suffering a bad crash in the spring classics, he scrapped that idea and will compete in the Tour de France instead.

On Saturday, Van Aat supported his Belgian teammate and Olympic gold medalist Remco Evenpoel, who had won bronze in the men's time trial the previous week.

Evenpoel will rest for a few weeks, but Van Aat will soon focus again on Grand Tour stage racing.

""Holiday, no, I'll be at the start of the Vuelta in two weeks," Van Aert said late Saturday night on the Belgian TV show "Paris by night."

Van Aert rode for Jonas Vingegaard in the Tour de France, targeting stages and sprints with some freedom. At the Vuelta a España, Van Aert will race alongside his American teammate Sepp Kuss, also the defending champion, and will likely play a very similar role. Visma Lease-a-Bike is expected to add Van Aert's compatriot Sian Witdebroeks to its team for the Vuelta.

Uitdebroeks is likely to abstain from the Giro d'Italia and focus on Grand Tour racing in Spain, like Van Aert.

Van Aert's end-of-season race program includes the World Championships road race in Switzerland (September 29) and the Gravel World Championships in his native Belgium (October 5).
