Eritrea's Biniam Girmay has extended his contract and committed his long-term future with Intermarché Wanty through 2028 after a highly successful Tour de France.
Girmay, who made Tour history by becoming the first black African rider to win a stage and the points jersey (green), will remain with the Belgian team led by Jean-François Brulard for at least four more seasons after joining from DELKO in 2021 Jean-François Brulard's Belgian team in 2021.
“Intermarche Wanty is like a family to me. The results achieved in this Tour de France confirm that Intermarché Wanty is the perfect team to achieve my goals, with a highly developed performance structure but always maintaining a family atmosphere,” Gil May said in a team release.
“In every situation, the team supported and trusted me even in the most difficult moments. Intermarche Wanty remains my favorite team, so it's a natural choice to continue the adventure for two more years.”
Gil May successfully completed the stage 21 time trial in Nice on Sunday, confirming his historic green jersey win. His focus now turns to the Paris Olympics road race on August 3.
“I am confident that we can still accomplish great things together and we are already moving on to our next goals starting with the Olympics! I am so happy to be able to continue this story with my favorite team,” Gilmey said.
Gilmey's historic stage victories were not just one, but three, including victories in Colombie-les-Deux-Eglise and Villeneuve-sur-Lottes from stage 3 in Turin.
“In 2021 we started a great journey with Biniam Guillemay. For the past four years we have been building on this and this Tour de France has taken Binium and our Intermarché Wanty team to the top of world cycling,” said Brulato.
“It was therefore only natural to continue writing this story for another four years. This also represents another step forward in the development of our team, which continues to grow year after year”
.
Gilmey is aiming for a medal in Paris next month, but the real dream of some on the team is to go one step further from their historic victory in Ghent-Wevelgem in 2022 and win one of cycling's five major monuments.
“The results during the Tour prove that our approach is working.
. Our next goal is to win the Monument and we will do everything in our power to achieve this in the coming years.”
