Tadej Pogachal withdrew from the Paris Olympics citing fatigue after completing the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France double for the first time since 1998.
Pogachal was scheduled to compete in the men's road race on August 3. Jan Tratnik will compete in the time trial on Saturday, while Matej Mohoric and Luka Mejek will also compete in the road race.
Defending Olympic time trial champion Primoš Roglic was not in the original lineup and has not been announced as a replacement for Pogachar.
“The selection committee for the men's cycling team has revealed the names of the cyclists who will compete in this year's Paris Olympics.
“Unfortunately, Tadej Pogachal will not be competing. He will be replaced by his leading colleague, Domen Novak. We wish Dom all the best and success.”
”Congratulations again to the winner of the French race, who has won the most prestigious cycling race in the world for the third time.
Pogachar is expected to receive a hero's welcome in the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana on Wednesday, July 24, in honor of his historic achievement.
According to an interview with BiciSport magazine's agent Johnny Carrera (one half of A&J All Sports), there were rumors that Pogachar would miss this gold medal-chasing event after winning a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games.
Pogachar also did not say much about Paris 2024 after winning the Tour de France in Nice, choosing instead to focus on the Zurich World Championships in September.
Some of the Slovenian national team selections were controversial, especially Pogachar's fiancée, Urska Zigato, who was left out of the women's road squad despite being the national champion and the best female rider in the country.
