Lotte Kopetsky Aims for Three Olympic Medals Despite COVID-19 After Giro d'Italia

Lotte Kopecky, despite having to recover from a COVID-19 infection after last week's Giro d'Italia women's, is still aiming for three medals in the individual time trial, road race, and omnium at the Paris Olympics, which will be held from July 27 to August 11 They are.

The Belgian all-rounder is a world champion in the road race and a medalist in the omnium. But she also intends to give her best in the individual time trial, which kicks off Saturday's cycling action.

“It [the time trial] is a question mark for me too,” Kopecky told Sporza. 'I've been practicing really hard. But at the Giro Donne I used COVID. But at the Giro Donne I got infected with COVID.

“I took it easy for a few days. My training at the track camp this weekend went well and my numbers were good. I don't see any problems.”

Kopecky ended the 2023 season at the first ever UCI World Championships combined in Glasgow, winning three of the four world titles he pursued in the elimination and points races and winning the road race alone after a hard-fought battle. She also won a bronze medal in the omnium.

She carried that success into this year, focusing on the spring classics, where she won Paris-Roubaix, and the Giro d'Italia women, where she finished second overall behind Elisa Longo Borghini. She also won the Belgian Championships with a double title in road and time trial.

She said she has been training on her time trial bike for this competition and questioned whether gold or silver medals would be out of reach for the likes of world champion Chloe Dygert.

“I don't have a lot of experience in this part of the sport, but I'm in good shape and doing my best, Kopecky said. 'It's true that I have a better chance in the other events, and that's more helpful.

Kopecky said he believes he has done everything he can to be in top shape ahead of the Olympics, but said the time trial is an event he would like to improve on.

”I have only been working on it for a year. My position has improved a lot and my material and clothing is good. We've done the best we can for this competition, but there is still room for improvement,” Kopecký said.

“I think I'm ready and my form is good. It would be great to get a medal on Saturday. If that doesn't work out, I think there are a few more days where I have a chance.”

The women will compete in a 32.4km time trial that will start upstream of the Eiffel Tower on the Invalides. The start is at the Esplanade and the finish is at the Alexandre III Bridge. The route is winding and somewhat technical, but generally flat, with a 5km finishing straight

“It's not super technical, but the road conditions are not good anywhere. You have to watch out for potholes,” Kopecky said of the course.

“It's a long time trial, and when you're tired, you're strong. I hope to wake up on Saturday with good legs.”
