Tadej Pogachar is off to a strong start in this year's Tour de France. The Slovenian superstar has already worn the yellow jersey for a day and introduced his yellow-accented bike yesterday.
The bike was kept for a day as Richard Karapas led the race, but will have to be taken out of the cupboard again as Pogachar brilliantly regained the race lead after a sensational attack and a hair-raising descent on the Galibier Pass.
After the Giro, UAE Team Emirates Sports Manager Joxen Matshin commented that Pogachar was "too tired to finish," and in an interview first published by BiciPro, suggested the possibility of a lightweight race for the Tour.
"We tested some new things, mainly lightweighting the bike, and we also did a time trial test," Mateksin said.
"Small things, but they make a difference. The bike is the same as in the Giro, but we made it a little lighter."
We've been keeping a close eye on the aforementioned lightweight moves throughout the Tour's inaugural season and are excited to see things like aftermarket lightweight brake pads and upgraded bolts. Cycling News took a picture of Pogachar's number two bike.
It is well known that UAE Team Emirates has a contract with carbon exotica "Carbon-Ti" and their components are installed on their bikes. Some of the new parts we have not seen before, like the Spanish ceramic bottom bracket, upgraded derailleur hangers, and upgraded brake caliper hardware. I love seeing these upgraded parts, it reminds me of buying parts online for my own bike and feels refreshing in this day and age of sponsor right. May the peloton continue to lighten its weight.
