The first of two individual time trials in the 2024 Tour de France will take place on stage 7, a 25.3km route from Nuits-Saint-Georges to Jouvre-Chambertin.
For second-placed Remco Evenpole (Sourdal-Quickstep), it will be a chance to wear the rainbow stripes and gain 45 seconds on Pogachar in the GC standings.
Time trial Olympic champion Primoš Roglic (Red Bull-Bohra-Hansgrohe) is in fifth place overall, 1:14 back. Two-time Tour champion Jonas Vingegaard (Wisma-Ries-A-Bike) won stage 16 last year. He is currently in third place overall, 50 seconds back.
Look for American Matteo Jorgenson (Visma Lease-a-Bike) to take advantage of the undulating course to jump up into the top 10. Currently in 11th place overall in a group of four, 3:21 behind the race leader, Jorgenson placed fourth in the ITT of the Criterium du Dauphiné and finished second overall in the Tour with podium finishes in the two climbing stages.
The 1.6km climb from Royle Vergy to Carly averages 6.1%, but is in the middle of the race, allowing the riders to regain lost momentum in the remaining 10.9km to the flat finish.
Mark Cavendish and Astana Kazakstan teammate Mikhail Morkov will lead the 174 riders off the start at 13:05 local time.
The top 10 racers will run the course in 2-minute intervals from 16:42 to 17:00. The first time check will take place before the Mesange climb at 8.6 km, the second at the top of the climb at 14.4 km, and the third at 6.4 km in Morey-Saint-Denis.
Organizers estimate the winning time to be in the 29-minute range, so stay tuned to Cycling News' live reports for all the updates until the winner is determined.
