Road racing world champion Mathieu Van der Pol is enjoying another historic classic campaign this year, enjoying his time in the rainbow bands. Van der Pol, who finished on the podium in Liège-Bastogne-Liège in the spring, did not race until he lined up in Florence at the start of the Tour de France.
For his victories in the E3 Saxo Classic, Ronde van Vlaanderen, and Paris-Roubaix, van der Poel rode a very simple white Canyon Air Road, a modest display of his world champion status.
In cycling's biggest race, Van der Poel's Airload was a bit bolder with rainbow stripes on the downtube, fork, and seat tube, although still modest compared to the colorways of previous world champions.
It's not just the paint that's new; Van der Pol is also riding the currently unreleased Canyon Air Road, which was first spotted at the Criterium du Dauphiné. At first glance, this new frameset appears to have almost the same silhouette as the current Airload, but with a few distinct changes to further optimize its slipperiness as it cuts through the wind.
The understated paint scheme uses the same glossy white undercoat that Van der Pol has been riding with all season, but the paint is given a splatter effect, leaving room for the white undercoat to peek through for a more understated The result is a more subdued look.
The new bike appears to be a refresh of the existing platform rather than a redesign.
