Andre Drege Dies at 25 after Crashing at Tour of Austria

Andre Drege, a professional cyclist for Team Corps Repsol, has died at the age of 25 from injuries sustained in a crash at the Tour of Austria on Saturday.

Tour of Austria organizers officially announced Drege's death on Saturday, July 6, after the fourth stage.

According to Tour of Austria organizers, Drege fell on the descent of the Großglockner and sustained fatal injuries.

The Queen's fourth stage of the Tour of Austria is 151.7 km from St. Johann Alpendorf to Carus, and includes the mid-race Husser Tor, Hochtor (peaking 66 km into the stage), and the Isersberg and Carus am Grossglockner The climbs include.

News of Drege's injury during the stage was limited, but the awards ceremony was cancelled.

Tour of Austria organizers said, "It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that we have to announce the passing of André Dréguet.

"On Saturday, July 6, on stage 4 of the Tour of Austria, on the descent of the Großglockner, Andre crashed and was seriously injured. [Our entire team is devastated by this tragic accident and our thoughts and prayers are with Andre's family, loved ones, and his team, Coop Repsol, during this incredibly difficult time.

Filippo Ganna of Ineos Grenadiers won stage 4 and Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates) took the overall lead.

Event organizers have yet to announce whether the final stage of the Tour of Austria will be held on Sunday.

Drege was born in Norway and lived in Stranda. According to his biography on the Team Coup Repsol website, he was fascinated by cycling from an early age; he started cycling at age 14 and moved to Lillehammer in 2016 to attend NTG, one of the top sports and educational schools in the country.

Drege won two stages and the overall at Visit South Aegean Islands that year, one stage and the overall at Tour of Rhodes Powered by Rodos Palace, and two stages at Circuit des Ardennes and Tour du Loir et Cher, and seven wins at the Circuit des Ardennes and Tour du Loir et Cher, including a stage win at each.

"We are devastated by the tragic passing of André Dreguet. Our thoughts and prayers are with Andre's family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time," Team Corp Repsol said.

"Andre's family has requested privacy to mourn their loss.
