Ineos Grenadiers has announced its star-studded roster for the 2024 Tour de France, with Carlos Rodriguez, who made great strides at last year's Tour, and 2019 winner Egan Bernal leading the GC contenders.
Rodriguez had a great Tour in 2023, taking a stage win on stage 14 ahead of Jonas Vingegaard (Vimalys a Bike) and Tadej Pogachar (UAE Team Emirates) and finishing fifth overall in Paris despite a late crash. In the Tour de Romandie, he took the overall win.
Bernal, a former winner, continues his resurgence after a crash that ended his career and athletic career in 2022, and rode near his best Tour de Suisse earlier this month, finishing fourth overall.
The GC pairing will include former Tour winner Geraint Thomas, a podium finisher at the Giro d'Italia, and talented young and experienced riders such as Tom Pidcock, MichaĆ Kwiatkowski, Lawrence De Plus, Jonathan Castroviejo, and Ben Turner
"The power is in the hands of the people.
"After a strong and consistent season, Carlos (Rodriguez) will lead INEOS Grenadiers throughout France. Carlos continues to impress us with his professionalism not only in the races, but on and off the bike," said Performance Director Scott Drewer in a team release.
"With the strength and Tour experience of Egan [Bernal] right beside him, supported by Tom [Pidcock] and Geraint [Thomas], we want to be aggressive, disrupt the competition, and take the race by storm.
Rodriguez showed at last year's Tour that he is one of the best GC riders in the world. He may not be able to compete with Pogachar and Vingegaard for the overall win, but the contenders for the podium will know what he is capable of.
"So far my preparation has been good and I am confident that I will start in Florence in top form. My start this year was slower than I expected, but I was able to turn that around and my legs are in good shape.
For Bernal, being announced as co-leader of Ineos in France is a big moment after fighting to get back on track for over two years. His results are looking better every time he joins the World Tour podium contenders in 2024.
"I am very happy to be selected again. My ambition is to be really competitive and to be a real difference maker in the races," Bernal said.
Thomas and Pidcock were announced as support riders for the two leaders, but Thomas has always aimed to be the GC rider who wins the Tour de France. However, he has another goal in mind, as he will be defending his Olympic MTB title immediately after the Tour.
Still, a GC win is not out of the question after finishing sixth overall in the TT at the Tour de Suisse, in addition to a win in the Alpe d'Huez in 2022.
"I've won stages in the Tour before and would love to do it again. The opening few stages this year are a real opportunity, but there are a lot of riders who want to take the yellow jersey," said the young Briton.
"Since returning to racing at the Tour de Suisse after a block at altitude, I've improved every day and had a great day on the TT bike.
Thomas will be starting his 13th Tour and 21st Grand Tour, but he stands by what he said at the Giro and has no plans for a GC challenge.
"This is the first time I've done the Giro/Tour double, so I wasn't sure how I'd feel about getting back into training after the Giro. Personally, I'd like to race with a little less pressure, mix it up more freely, and try to really get stuck in."
