Movistar, the venerable Spanish WorldTour team, will enter this year's Tour de France with a well-rounded lineup that will offer a wide range of GC, breakaway, and group sprint options.
Movistar will be led by stage race specialist Enric Mas (29), who will be the team's first rider in the Tour de France. The Mallorcan rider, a three-time runner-up in the Vuelta a España, is looking to regain momentum in the Tour de France, finishing fifth in 2020 and sixth in 2021 before retiring in COVID in 2022 and Richard Calapaz (EF Education Easy Post) also fell and crashed in the first stage.
Mas' unofficial status as Spain's leading Grand Tour racer has been partially replaced by the rise of young GC riders like Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) and Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers), but Movistar has had multiple all-rounders to strengthen the Tour de France team.
Alex Aramburu, recently crowned Spanish national champion, his predecessor and teammate in the red and gold jersey, Oiel Lazcano, and Davide Formolo, who will be new in 2024, will get their chance on breakaways.
All eyes are also on Spain's Javier Romo, who will make his Tour de France debut at age 25, to see how he fares in the world's biggest cycling race. Romo, along with Austria's Gregor Mühlberger and Portuguese veteran and former Vuelta a España stage winner Nelson Oliveira, will likely carry much of the overall teamwork, but each will also have their opportunities to shine. Cavagna, who signed with the Spanish team in 2024 last week, expressed various concerns about the current situation within the team, including language barriers and worries that he might not be selected for the Tour de France.
Another eye-catching element in Movistar's lineup is Colombian sprinter Fernando Gaviria, who will return to the Tour de France for the first time since leading the race and winning two stages in 2018.
Gaviria has already competed in the Giro d'Italia this season, and with only 28 days of racing in 2024 for Mas, who is also expected to compete in the Vuelta a España, the Tour de France is his first major goal of the year.
