Belgian WorldTour team Intermarché Wanty has finalized its eight-man lineup for the Tour de France, with sprinter Biniam Girmay making his second Grand Tour appearance of the season after crashing at the 2024 Giro d'Italia.
The 24-year-old Gilmey had the misfortune of crashing twice in just six kilometers during the fourth stage of the Giro d'Italia, then abandoning the race.
However, he returned to the Grand Tour in his debut Tour de France last year, finishing third in Bordeaux and sixth on the Champs-Elysées.
After winning the Circuit Franco-Belge in late May and finishing second in the Brussels Cycling Classic earlier this month, Gil May looks to be in great shape for the Tour de France and will be in the bunch sprint with teammate Gerben Theisen in Fastman, Belgium He will be in charge.
South African Luis Maintejes, a regular top-10 finisher at the Tour de France and winner of the summit finish at the Vuelta a España, will again handle GC for the Belgian team.
Ike Visbeek, head of performance at Intermarche Wanty, explained to Wielerfilt the choice of the two fast men." The Tour's sprint stages clearly show that some stages suit Vini better than others, and some stages suit Gerben better than others."
Gil May and Thyssen will be backed by former Yellow Jersey and stage winner Mike Tunissen, as well as Hugo Page and Lorenz Rex.
German Georg Zimmermann, winner of the 2023 Criterium du Dauphiné mountain stage, whose team's best result was second place behind Pero Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious) on stage 10 of the Tour, will again be in the running.
Corby Goossens, who was committed to knee surgery until the Tour de Romandie due to a crash at last year's Vuelta a España, is another one to watch on the climb.
