Australia announced its cycling road race and track teams for the Paris Olympics on Saturday.
Simon Clark and Luke Plapp will compete on the road along with Matthews. Plapp, an Australian champion who won a bronze medal in the track endurance race at the last Olympics, will also compete in the time trial. Brown, looking to step up in the race against time, will compete in the road race with Australian champion Ruby Roseman-Gannon and trusted domestique Lauretta Hanson.
"Tokyo was a special experience for me, but finishing fourth in the individual time trial made me want to go even higher," said Brown. I have a big goal in Paris and that is to win a medal on the first day of competition."
The 32.4 km men's and women's time trial in Paris will begin on July 27, with the 273 km men's road race on Saturday, August 3, and the 158 km women's road race on Sunday, August 4.
"I am excited to be competing with Lauretta and Ruby again for another great result in the road races. We are a small team, but I believe our individual strengths complement each other and make us strong contenders for the race."
This will be the second Olympic appearance for Brown, Clark, and Plapp, while Roseman-Gannon, Hanson, and Matthews will be making their debuts.
"It's a real honor to represent Australia in the Olympics," Matthews said. 'It's been a dream of mine ever since I found out about the Olympics.
"I've come so close to making the national team twice before and to have a course that suits me is like a dream come true."
Matthews and Brown were natural choices to lead the team, given their characteristics as riders and their recent results. Brown is a two-time world championship time trial silver medalist and finished first in Liege-Bastogne-Liege in April. However, the competition for the remaining slots was fierce, with only three road race teams in both the men's and women's competitions and four in the top teams.
The road and track cycling teams were originally scheduled to be announced on Monday, June 24, but were postponed due to an appeal.
Track cycling will run from Monday, August 5 through Sunday, August 11, and Matthew Glatzer will compete in his fourth Olympics along with sprint team members Matthew Richardson, Lee Hoffman, and Kristina Cronan.
Sam Welsford won a bronze medal in Tokyo as part of the Team Pursuit team and a silver medal in Rio. Tokyo teammate Kelland O'Brien also returns, while Connor Lahey and Oliver Bredin make their debuts. Georgia Baker will also make her third appearance as part of the track endurance contingent, along with Alexandra Manley, Maeve Plouffe, and debutants Sophie Edwards and Chloe Moran.
The Australian representatives for BMX and mountain biking will be announced next week.
