Peter Sagan, in his short-lived return to his home Tour of Slovakia, once again ends his road racing career.

Peter Sagan will race the last road race of his career for the second time after a brief move to the Pierre Baguette team in 2024, on home roads in today's final stage of the Tour of Slovakia.

The team, whose DS is Sagan's brother Julai, confirmed that the three-time world champion will ride his final race on stage 5 after Sagan announced earlier in the week that it would be his last dance.

"This will be my last official road race. I can think of no better place to close this chapter of my career than my home country of Slovakia," Sagan said in an Instagram post.

"I look forward to an exciting race together with my teammates from Pierre Baguette Cycling, a team made up of promising young Slovak and Czech athletes."

"Most of all, I can't wait to meet my wonderful Slovakian fans once again. I am confident that we will have a great week through Slovakia."

"Peter Sagan will be racing his last road race today at the Tour of Slovakia. Thank you for everything, Peter," tweeted Pierre Baguette Cycling, followed by a list of Sagan's highest accolades.

These include three world titles, 12 stages of the Tour de France, a record seven Tour green jerseys, Paris-Roubaix, the Tour of Flanders, and 121 professional wins.

Sagan was scheduled to retire from the road world after competing in his last professional road race with Total Energies at the Tour de Vendée at the end of 2023. However, Sagan decided to focus on mountain biking and returned to the discipline he dominated for most of the 2010s at the Tour de Hongri.

Sagan underwent multiple heart surgeries this season, giving his loyal fans 10 more days to see him on the road in 2024. He developed tachycardia during a MTB race in Spain, so doctors implanted a monitor to track his arrhythmia.

His MTB campaign was intended to qualify him for the Paris Olympics, but by the end of the qualifying period in May, Slovakia's UCI ranking had not risen sufficiently, ending Sagan's dreams of competing for gold.

With the Olympic dream over and no special invitation from the IOC, Cycling News reported that this would likely be Sagan's last race.
