Triathlon Taylor Knibb confirms to US cycling team for Paris 2024 Olympics

USA Cycling confirmed its participation in the 2024 Paris Olympics road competition, with triathlete and new national time trial champion Taylor Knibb adding Chloe Dygert to the women's team.

The men's team consists of Matteo Jorgenson, Brandon McNulty and Magnus Sheffield. Jorgenson will focus only on road racing, while McNulty and Sheffield will double up in the time trial.

Dygart was the first U.S. rider to qualify for the Olympics after winning the World Time Trial title in Scotland last summer. Canyon-SRAM riders line out as favorites in time trials and also participate in road races and team pursuit. Having won a silver medal in Team Pursuit in Rio 3 years ago and a bronze medal in the same event in Tokyo 3 years ago, Diggart is competing in the 3rd Olympic Games.

Trek Factory Racing's Knibb qualified for the second and final place of the U.S. women's team by winning an individual time trial at the National Championship in Charleston last month. USA Cycling confirmed on Friday night that it will compete in a time trial and road race in Paris, as well as in the triathlon.

Knibb won a triathlon Silver medal in the Mixed Relay at the Tokyo Olympics and she was the 2022 and 2023 Iron Man 70.3 World Champion in both.

"Cycling has a very steep learning curve and I'm excited and nervous for what's ahead at the same time," Knibb said in a statement released by USA Cycling.

McNulty was a strong performer at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago and was ranked 6th in the dramatic men's road race, with UAE Team Emirates riders making the Paris Games the focus of the season.

Arizona won a time trial at last month's National Championship and continued a fantastic run of form in 2024, where he collected 6 victories. McNulty will not ride the Tour de France and will be ready for Paris.

"I was really excited to go to the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo. Its best result – 6th in the road race - motivates me even more," McNulty said. "The race is very aggressive and I'm always reliving it. At home in Arizona and Girona, I already train with a 100% focus on Paris. My goal is to "get the medal back!"

Sheffield was his pick in a series of excellent time trial displays in 2nd place, including McNulty's second place in discipline at the Tour de Romandy in 2024, and the Ineos rider was third in the Giro d'Italia Stage 7 time trial.

Jorgenson will be a key part of the Tour de France team on Visma-Lease A Bike after enjoying a remarkable season so far. He is among the favorites of road racing.

"The Olympics have always been a part of my childhood," Jorgenson said. "I remember watching sports I had never heard of during the summer and praising athletes," he says. Certainly it had a huge impact on me and was one of the reasons I decided to pursue a career as a professional athlete. Being able to race in Paris, especially following the best years of my career, is a dream come true.

The cycling schedule in Paris marks a change from the last five Olympics, with a time trial preceding the road race. The men's and women's time trial will take place on 7/27 (Sat) the day after the opening ceremony. The men's road race will be held on 8/3 (Saturday), and the women's road race will be held the next day.
