Emmanuel Buchmann breaks collarbone and hip in Tour de Suisse crash

Emmanuel Buchmann crashed in the last few kilometers of the second stage of the Tour de Suisse, leaving the German champion out of the race with multiple fractures.

Initially, his Bora-Hansgrohe team announced that Buchmann was involved in a crash with 1.5 km to go, but was conscious and would undergo further tests.

"Definitely not the news we were hoping for," said Buchmann. 'Examinations have revealed fractures to his collarbone and hip. Both injuries will require surgery. We wish Emu a full and speedy recovery!"

Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) was also off his bike at the crash site, but confirmed that he did not fall himself, but was forced to stop behind the crash.

The second stage was won by Brian Coquard (Cofidis) and ended, as expected, in a sprinting contest. Bora-Hansgrohe tried to set up Jordi Meeus, but even outside of Buchmann's crash, the stage did not go as planned for the team. Meeus lost contact with the lead group on the final climb, leaving Beulah's hopes to Roger AdriĆ , who finished in eighth place.

Buchmann's abandonment came after he had missed selection for the Giro d'Italia and had just returned to racing after a rest after finishing second overall and two stage podiums at the Tour de Hongri.

"He was in great shape and ready to challenge for the top places. We will miss him here, but wish him the best."

The eight-day Tour de Suisse, which is 948.9 km long with 19,000 m of total climbing, will feature a series of flat races with a punchy finish on Tuesday's third stage.
