Nairo Quintana Abandons Tour de Suisse after Breaking Hand in Stage 2 Crash

Nairo Quintana abandoned the Tour de Suisse after crashing in the finale of stage 2 in Regensdorf, suffering a broken bone in his right hand.

Quintana re-entered the race and finished the stage 2:23 behind winner Brian Coquard (Cofidis), but after a diagnosis of his injury on Monday night, he did not race the third stage.

"After crashing on stage 2 of the Tour de Suisse yesterday, Nairo complained of pain and underwent radiological tests last night.

"Quintana suffered a non-displaced fracture of the fourth metacarpal of his right hand. The Colombian's hand is immobilized and will not start the third stage today.

A number of riders crashed in the finale of stage 2 of the Tour de Suisse, including Emmanuel Buchmann (Bora-Hansgrohe), who broke his hip and collarbone.

It is not yet clear how long Quintana will spend on the sidelines, but the Colombian was not scheduled to compete in this year's Tour de France after finishing 19th overall in the recent Giro d'Italia. Since the start of the season, Movistar has indicated that Quintana will also ride for Enric Mas at the Vuelta a España.

Quintana failed to find a team for the 2023 season after testing positive for tramadol at the 2022 Tour de France and rejoined Movistar.

The 34-year-old had a difficult comeback season after contracting COVID-19 at the Tour Colombia in February. The disease delayed the start of his European season and forced him to retreat further when he tore ligaments in his arm in a crash at the Volta a Catalunya.

These problems caused Quintana to downgrade his Giro ambitions from overall classification to a stage win. He was caught and passed by Maria Rosa's Tadei Pogachar on the final approach to the finish in Livigno on stage 15, finishing second.

Quintana supported Mas in the Tour de Suisse, who was using the Swiss race to prepare for the Tour. However, it remains to be seen if Oiel Lazcano, who showed previously unappreciated climbing ability at the Criterium du Dauphiné in July, will flank Mas. Lazcano, the Spanish champion, is out of contract at the end of the season and is rumored to be moving to Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe.
