Victor Campenaerts will leave Lotto Dostony in 2025 to join the team's Tour de France winner, Visma Lease-a-Bike.
Campenaerts' contract is scheduled to expire after five seasons across two different stints at Lotto Dostony, and he will reportedly return to the team he rode for in 2016 and 2017 on a three-year deal, according to Belgian media.
No new transfers will be announced until August 1, but several sources confirmed to Het Nieuwsblad yesterday that Campenaerts will join Wisma, and the 32-year-old himself confirmed to the Belgian newspaper that he will sign a contract through 2028 without revealing the team. [I can't say much about it before August 1, but I can say that I will sign a three-year contract with another team," Campenaerts told Het Nieuwsblad. 'And I can't say for sure yet, but there is a possibility that after that period of time I will put my career on the back burner.'
"That would be another role. My new goal is to win the Tour de France as a team."
As one of the top innovators in the peloton, Campenaerts has changed roles and rider types throughout his career, specializing in time trials, once an hour record holder, a top contender in the classics, and an escape specialist.
But now he wants to be an important domestique in the Grand Tours and, like Mikkel Bjerg (UAE Team Emirates) and Jonatan Catroviejo (Ineos Grenadiers) who also started as TT specialists, for GC riders to be a force to be reckoned with up front.
According to Het Laatste Nieuws, Campenaerts, despite struggling in this year's Cobblestone Classic, was highly sought after in the spring, with Sudar Quickstep and Ineos Grenadiers looking to recruit his skills as well.
However, Visma was the winner of the negotiations and managed to sign a three-season contract with one of cycling's best teams. Both the team and the Campenaerts are keen to get the best out of everything in terms of performance.
Lotto Dstny, of course, could not confirm much about Campenaerts' reported departure prior to August 1, but was willing to admit how big a loss the experienced Belgian would be.
"Victor will be a free agent this year. I don't know how the contract negotiations with Stéphane [Heureux, CEO] are going. I don't think it is impossible that he will move to a new team after the season.
"We have benefited a lot from him over the last three years. He was an added value to the team. And he continues to add value to the team today. I don't mean to outshine him as a leader, but his contribution in and out of the race should not be underestimated."
[22"Thanks to Victor, the team has made great strides in terms of innovation, time trials, and looking for all the benefits we can benefit from.
Campenaerts, along with fellow Belgians Wout Van Aert and Tiesj Benoot, will move to Vimalies a Bike to replace the Slovenian, who is said to be moving to Bora-Hansgrohe in 2025, a very versatile classics leader and Grand Tour domestique, Jan Tratnik, was the main target as his successor.
