Olympic Fernando Gaviria Returns to Track in Omnium; Bernal and Martinez Selected for Colombian Road Squad in Paris

The Colombian Cycling Federation has announced its cycling team for the 2024 Paris Olympics, selecting Daniel Martinez (Bora-Hansgrohe) for the time trial and road race and Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) for the road race only. The federation chose Paula Patiño (Movistar) as the sole entry for the women's road race.

While the inclusion of Giro d'Italia runner-up Martinez (Colombia's time trial champion) was not much of a surprise, Bernal's inclusion represents the country's confidence that the serious injuries from the 2022 crash that had plagued his performance until this year have been overcome.

Bernal is currently third overall in the Tour de Suisse and was also third overall in the Volta a Catalunya and O Gran Camino earlier this season. He also has limited success in one-day races, finishing third behind compatriot Esteban Chaves in the 2019 Il Lombardia.

Bernal and Martinez were teammates at Ineos before Martinez moved to Bora Hansgrohe this season.

Patiño represented Colombia at the Tokyo Olympics, while Bernal and Martinez are making their Olympic debuts.

"Criteria considered for the selection of Paula, Daniel, and Egan were: technical analysis of UCI rankings for the last two years prior to the 2024 Paris Games; participation in major races on the World Tour circuit in both branches for the 2023 and 2024 seasons, 2021, 2022, and 2023, 2024 season elite national road championships, and a technical analysis of the routes where competitions will be held in the French capital."

"Paula Patiño, who is part of the Movistar team in Spain and has just won the national road championship title this season, last competed in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and finished 22nd."

"This is the best result in our country's women's road in Olympic history.

The country also announced its track and mountain bike teams and the surprise return of sprinter Fernando Gaviria to the velodrome. The Movistar rider last competed in track racing at the international level in 2016, when he won his second world title in the omnium and finished fourth in the same event at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Colombia has qualified two athletes for the individual sprint and keirin and one for the omnium, which Gaviria will fill.

Kevin Quintero and Cristian Ortega will compete in the Keirin and Sprint, while Martha Bayonne and Stephanie Cuadrado will compete in the Women's Keirin and Sprint.

Diego Alfonso Arias Cuervo will represent Colombia in the men's MTB cross country on July 28 in the hills of Elancourt outside Paris.
