Visma-Lease A Bike has announced that dylan van Baarle and Steven Kruijswijk will not participate in the Critérium du Dauphiné after falling into a massive crash in Stage 5.
Team manager Richard Plugge responded to an audience video showing many of the Peloton's riders falling and sliding down the ice-wet tarmac and asked, "Will this happen in F1?"
Among those who fell were race leader Lemco Evenepoel (Sudar Quickstep) and 2nd place Primos Roglic (Bora Hansgrohe). Fortunately, overall the 3rd Matteo Jorgenson avoided the worst crash, but he will start the last 2 tough mountain stages without his 3 main teammates.
"Following today's major crash, Dylan van Baarle and Steven Kruijswijk were taken to hospital," said Visma-Lease A Bikeは述べていますTwitter.com "Tests have revealed that Dylan has a broken collarbone and will need surgery, and Stephen has a small fracture to his lower back, which he will rest and heal.
"I am very disappointed to report that I have to miss both riders at the Tour de France. We wish them all the best for their recovery.
Van Baalle and Kruiswick were among dozens of riders who fell on a slippery descent at 21km and proceeded to Stage 5 from Ampoule Puy because the Samp incident was so widespread that organizers canceled the stage so that medical personnel could attend the injured.
Both riders were on a long team of Bismarck bikes for the Tour de France, along with defending champions Jonas Vingegaard and Wout van Aert, who are recovering from serious injuries suffered this spring.
Van Aert broke his sternum and ribs in a violent fall during Dwars door Vlaanderen while Vingegaard suffered a broken collarbone and several rib fractures, along with a collapse of his lungs due to a crash during Itzulia Basque Country on 4 May.
Evenepoel and Roglić were also involved in the Itzulia crash and recently returned to the race. Both seemed to be OK after the crash.
"I almost avoided a crash, but another bike got caught under my bike and I ended up on the ground on my right side again," Evenepoel said. "Overall, I think I'm fine, but I'll know more tomorrow morning before the start of stage 6.
Roglić also fell to his previously injured shoulder and said, "I crashed into my shoulder, that's not the best - that's the side I had surgery on a few years ago. You need to check it and see what state it is in. It was definitely a lot better for me than some, but I still got over the finish. But it's still shit that these things are happening.
